August 22nd, 2010 - "Agriculture carbon offsets are expected to help smooth the transition away from a fossil fuel economy by providing polluters with a relatively low-cost alternative to offset their current emissions while they make long-term investments in cleaner energy sources. USDA estimates that U.S. farmland, grassland, and rangeland could sequester approximately 200 400 million tons of additional carbon dioxide annually through the adoption of conservation practices. This is equivalent to 3-5% percent of the U.S.’s carbon emissions. In addition to soil sequestration, there are additional opportunities to reduce emissions through reduction of nitrogen fertilizer usage and increased winter/cover crops."   Read more...
